About TrueNorth Solutions
A Newfoundland and Labrador IT and GIS firm built on 16+ years of client relationships with municipalities, surveyors, and businesses across the province.
Daniel Myles
Founder & Principal — TrueNorth Solutions
I started TrueNorth Solutions to bring enterprise-quality GIS, IT, and software services to communities that are typically underserved by large technology vendors. Based in Terrenceville on the Burin Peninsula, I work remotely across Newfoundland and Labrador with the capability to deploy field crews province-wide.
My relationship with the surveying and municipal sectors in NL dates back to 2008, working with Edwards & Associates. Since then I've built GIS data pipelines, managed IT infrastructure for small businesses, surveyed land parcels and roads, and developed the two flagship products the company now offers: MunicipalGIS for municipal asset management and LandGazette for land records.
I hold the GIS Professional (GISP) designation from the GIS Certification Institute, and CompTIA A+ and Network+ certifications. I believe strongly in open-source technology, Canadian data sovereignty, and building software that actually fits how small municipalities operate — not how large vendors assume they do.
Credentials & Expertise
GIS Professional (GISP)
Issued by the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI). Recognises professional competency in GIS practice.
CompTIA A+
Industry-standard certification for IT support — hardware, operating systems, networking, and troubleshooting.
CompTIA Network+
Certification in networking infrastructure — LAN/WAN, TCP/IP, wireless, security, and network troubleshooting.
16+ Years in the NL Sector
Client relationships with NL municipalities, land surveyors, and businesses dating back to 2008 — with Edwards & Associates and independently.
Our Approach
Canadian-first, open-source by default
All TrueNorth products store data in Canada — MunicipalGIS runs on OVH Montréal infrastructure. We favour open-source software stacks (PostgreSQL/PostGIS, QGIS, Python, OpenLayers) over proprietary vendor lock-in.
Right-sized for small municipalities
NL has 274 municipalities — the vast majority with under 2,000 residents and limited budgets. We price and design accordingly. MunicipalGIS's Micro tier costs $2,400/year — less than most municipalities spend on a single software licence.
Honest, direct, remote-capable
TrueNorth is a sole proprietorship — you're working directly with Daniel, not a sales team. We tell you what you need, not what generates the most revenue. Field work is available province-wide using our Leica GS18T RTK system.
